Your first practice doesn’t need to be scary! Let us walk you through what to expect when you come visit us at Astro Skate in Tarpon Springs.
Our practices are Monday nights from 7pm-10pm and Wednesday nights from 8:30-10:30pm. Our skaters are Tarpon Springs locals, but also travel to us from all around Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough Counties.
Before you come by, we ask that all new skaters fill out our Introductory Survey, where you can share your experience with us.
If you plan on skating at your first practice, we require that you bring a mouth guard that has been molded to you. SISU brand mouth guards are very popular in roller derby, and can be purchased at Astro Skate in Tarpon Springs, our home skating rink.
We have rental skates and safety gear available on a first-come, first-serve basis and generally have at least enough for 8 skaters. We skate with helmets, mouth guards, elbow guards, wrist guards, and knee pads. Some newer skates also choose to skate with extra lower body pads to protect their hips and butt – whatever makes you more comfortable!
We’ll ask you to sign a simple safety waiver before beginning, and at least 1-2 league members will be available to answer questions during this time, helping you navigate the new process.
We’ll assist you in getting geared up, and if you’re ready, it’s then time to skate! Our practice will already be running by then, so a league member will help you onto the skating rink and have you skate around the outside until you are feeling comfortable. Depending on your skill level, you can join in to skating skills at any time. Our coaches focus on stopping, maneuvering and skating skills during practice.
NOTE: We do not hit or engage new skaters in any physical activity involving contact until you have purchased WFTDA insurance and passed a set list of minimum skills.
New skaters are welcome to be as little or as much involved in practices as they feel safe with. Newer skaters who need to focus on quad skating abilities are encouraged to attend open skates at Astro Skate to get their “sea legs”. Our coaches are adept at scaling practices and skills to meet all levels of abilities.
We invite all new skaters to practice with us FREE for 30 days, up to 8 practices. After that time, your league dues are just $30 and help pay venue rental. You are welcome to borrow skates and safety gear for as long as you need. When the time comes, we will help you budget and select your own safety gear and skates. New skater bundles for skates and all safety gear start around $200-$250.
